Privacy at Ask Yawn

We know Privacy Policies are usually a snooze, but this one matters - especially when you're sharing things about your family. At Ask Yawn, we take privacy seriously because most of us are parents too, and we know what trust means.

This page explains what we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and how we keep it safe. No sneaky stuff. No selling your data. Just full transparency so you can focus on what matters - getting through the day (and night).

By using Ask Yawn (the chat), The Village (our community), or our website (askyawn.com), you agree to this policy.

Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

This policy applies to Ask Yawn Pty Ltd (ABN 966 843 314 501), based in New South Wales, Australia. We offer:

  • Ask Yawn: a chat-based tool to support parents and caregivers (hosted via Streamlit)

  • The Village: our online community (hosted via Mighty Networks)

  • Our website: currently powered by Wix, used to share info and sign-up links

2. What information we collect (and why)

We collect just enough to give you the best experience – no more.

a) When you create an account or log in

We collect:

  • Your email address (so you can log in, reset your password, and receive important updates)

  • Your name or display name, if you choose to share it

We might also collect your IP address and device/browser type – this is a normal part of how websites work and helps us secure your account, troubleshoot issues, understand where traffic is coming from, and restrict access from certain jurisdictions if needed.

b) When you use Ask Yawn

You might tell us things like:

  • Your child’s age, routines, sleep habits, allergies or other context

  • Parenting style or preferences (e.g. gentle parenting, sleep training)

  • Your goals, challenges, or wins

We use this to personalise your experience and improve the advice you get. Some of this data may also be used (in anonymised or aggregated form) to help improve the quality of our tools and AI responses over time.

If you use our Sleep Plan Generator, we’ll also collect your responses so we can generate a custom sleep plan and email it to you. Providing your email as part of this feature means you may also receive relevant follow-up content or support emails, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

c) When you use The Village

You can post questions, respond to others, or message within Mighty Networks. That information stays within that platform unless you delete it. Using The Village means you align with the Mighty Networks Privacy Policy.

d) When you make a payment

If you subscribe to Ask Yawn, we collect payment through third-party providers like Stripe or PayPal. We never see or store your credit card details – they’re encrypted and managed securely by those services.

3. How we use your information

We use your data to:

  • Let you log in and use our services

  • Send you account updates or reminders

  • Personalise your experience (so the chat remembers what’s relevant)

  • Improve our tools, content, and AI models using anonymous data

  • Troubleshoot bugs and protect against spam, abuse, or unauthorised use

  • You won’t get marketing emails unless you explicitly opt in. We’ll never sell your data, it's not our thing.

4. Will we email you? Yes – here’s why

If you give us your email (e.g. to log in), we may email you:

  • To help you log in or reset your password

  • To confirm your account or payment

  • To send your personalised sleep plan (if you request one)

  • To share tips about how to get the most out of Yawn

  • To invite you to give feedback during beta testing or after using a feature

You can opt out of optional messages at any time – but some service emails are necessary to keep your account running.

5. Cookies & tracking (future-ready)

Right now, our website doesn’t use cookies or analytics. But in the future, we may add things like:

  • Google Analytics (to understand which pages are helpful)

  • Facebook/Meta pixels (to track ad performance)

  • Session cookies (to help you stay logged in)

If and when we introduce these, we’ll update this policy and give you the chance to opt in where required.

6. Third-party tools we currently use

Your data may be shared with trusted tools that help us run Ask Yawn:

  • Streamlit – our chat platform

  • Mighty Networks – our online community

  • Stripe & PayPal – for payments

  • OpenAI – for generating responses in Ask Yawn chat

  • Email providers – for sending login and support emails

They only get the minimum data required and are expected to keep it secure.

If we add new tools (like Mailchimp or a CRM), we’ll update this policy to reflect it.

7. How we keep your data safe
  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest

  • We restrict internal access and use logging to monitor any data interactions

  • Our team is trained on privacy best practices

  • We never share personally identifiable information with advertisers or third parties without your express permission

8. Anonymised insights & AI learning

To make Yawn smarter and more helpful, we may use anonymised data from chat interactions to improve how the system works. We might also use it to build reports, identify trends, or guide future updates.

This data will never include names, emails, or anything that could identify you or your child.

9. Your rights

You can:

  • Request a copy of the personal data we hold

  • Ask us to update or delete your information - literally all of it.

  • Unsubscribe from any non-essential emails

Just email us at support@askyawn.com and we’ll take care of it.

10. Children’s privacy

Ask Yawn is for adults 18+. We don’t knowingly collect data from children directly. Any child-specific information is provided by their caregiver and used only to tailor the support offered.

Ask Yawn is designed for adults — specifically parents, caregivers, and trusted supporters of children. We don’t collect personal information directly from children, and we don’t allow child accounts.

Sometimes, as part of getting tailored support through Ask Yawn, you may choose to share information about a child in your care — for example, their age, routine, temperament, or preferences. That’s completely voluntary.

This information is only used to provide you with personalised support through our chat experience. It’s never sold, and we don’t use it to create a profile of your child. If we ever use anonymised data to improve Ask Yawn (like making the advice better over time), we make sure there’s nothing in it that could identify you or your child.

11. International users

Ask Yawn is based in Australia but available globally. Your data may be processed in Australia or other countries where we operate, and we aim to comply with privacy frameworks like the Australian Privacy Act, GDPR, and HIPAA-style protections.

a) Legal basis for processing (GDPR)

If you’re located in the European Union or the UK, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR to collect and process your personal information:

  • Contract – when we need your information to deliver the services you’ve signed up for (e.g. logging in, saving your preferences, responding to your questions).

  • Consent – when you give us permission to do something (like sending optional emails or joining a research group). You can withdraw your consent at any time, just email support@askyawn.com

  • Legitimate interests – when we use your information in ways that are expected, low-risk, and help improve our product (like using anonymised chats to train our AI or tracking bugs to make Yawn better). We always balance these interests with your privacy rights.

12. Changes to this policy

We’ll let you know if there are any major updates. You can always find the latest version here on our website.
